Below are a few pictures from the pinnacle of my junior/young rider eventing experience. In 1994, I was one of two riders qualified and selected to represent the USCTA Area V at the US Jr/Young Rider CCN - One Star Championships at the North Georgia Three Day Event. My training, preparation and trip was also partially sponsored by the North Texas Combined Training Association. With my Appendix Quarter Horse (TB-QH cross), Telluride ("Telly"), I finished 8th place and gained a love for the magnificence of the full three day event (or as it is called today, the "long format" or "with steeplechase"). The bond between horse and rider after successfully preparing for and completing such an extensive test is like nothing I could hope to describe. It was this experience that makes me so sad to witness the disappearance of roads & tracks and steeplechase in today's three day events. As I am beginning to compete again, I hope that I can achieve this level of competitive success again soon and that the long format stays around long enough to allow me the opportunity!
If you're wondering what a CCN* classic endurance day included - here's a summary:
Phase A (Roads & Tracks) - 2950m @ 220 mpm - 13:30 Optimum Time Phase B (Steeplechase) - 2240m @ 640 mpm - 3:30 Optimum Time Phase C (Roads & Tracks) - 6075 @ 220 mpm - 28:00 Optimum Time - Ten Minute Box - Phase D (XC jumping) - 4201 m @ 520 mpm - 8:05 Optimum Time
Horse Inspection
Dressage
Endurance Phase B - Steeplechase
Endurance Phase D - Cross Country
While walking the cross country course, Mike Huber, myself and Kelly Barringer were interviewed by the local news - too bad they didn't have a hair and make-up crew on call!
