In 1981, my dad's job moved us from Los Angeles, California to Dallas, Texas. As a condition of the move, my mom convinced my dad to make her childhood dream come true - my mom always wanted a pony! I definitely came out on top of that deal, because my mom's father gave the pony to me! His name was Hopscotch, and we call him Hoppy. At 36 inches tall, my new little shetland pony was just perfect for me at 4 years of age! Hoppy was my best friend, companion and partner in crime through my entire childhood. And, once, Hoppy was even a Dressage horse! After I had been taking dressage lessons for about a year on my 14.2 hand Arabian, Gayhad, I asked my mom if I could enter both Gayhad and Hoppy in the local dressage schooling show. And, wouldn't you know it, Hoppy beat Gayhad in both his classes!!! Currently, Hoppy is enjoying a life of retirement in Texas. At about 40 years of age, he is blind and has given up eating carrots in preference of softer grapes. The last time I was able to visit him was in 2003, and I think he remembered me. What a special friend that little pony was and will always be to me.
March 27, 2009: Today, my little Hoppy moved onto greener pastures. He lived to be about 41 years old, and he was healthy and happy until the very end. He will have a private burial at Pine Hill Pet and Horse Cemetary in Bowie, Texas. I knew this day would come eventually, but it has always made me so happy to know Hoppy was doing well and still bringing joy and amusement to everyone he met! Hoppy was one special pony & he will always have a big place in my heart.
At our first lead-line show, Hoppy and I won a fourth & fifth place ribbon!. My mom says I was very excited to have won "girl color" ribbons - luckily, it didn't take long before I set my sight on the "boy color" blue ribbon!
Here are some pictures of Hoppy in 2003 - blind, but still so cute! He looks so small to me now!
